Galternatives is a tool to enable users to use the GUI to update the /etc/alternatives files, which decide the default commands/apps for various tasks. John Pywtorak sent in this tip via email (thanks John).

The /etc/alternatives defines default applications for the traditional Unix/Linux system – such as, the default application to handle irc, to browse the web etc.

You can install galternatives using:
$sudo apt-get install galternatives

After it is installed, you can run it using:
$gksudo galternatives

The next screenshot shows you me updating the x-www-browser to Epiphany (did I tell you it is “simply” wonderful?).

This genius chair/easel provides a huge roll of paper for a kid to sit on while s/he draws, and comes with a five-year supply of paper.

The Chair is made with drawing paper, as the
paper is being “drawn upon”, the size of the front
cylinder increases and thus follows the child’s
growth!- age 2-7 Years. Clean paper is transferred
from the back cylinder to the front simply by
rolling the front cylinder backwards. The amount
of paper is approx. 500 meters, which means that
the paper can be changed twice a week for
5 years.

NBC has made offical what many people thought would happen: they’ve canceled The West Wing. Actually, they
canceled it before John Spencer passed away on December 16. They’re just now announcing it.

They also announced that creator Aaron Sorkin and director/producer Tommy Schlamme will not be involved in
the finale. Damn.

The series will end with a two hour episode on May 14. A one hour retrospective will air just before the finale.
(Personally, I’m happy the show is ending. The quality has dropped off the past couple of years, and like NBC says,
it’s time.)

TiVo just announced
their TiVo Series 3 HD Digital Media Recorder, with dual
HD recording and 300 hours of recording space. The device supports dual CableCARDs, of the 2.0 or 1.0 a variety, so
either way you can get dual signals, with one 2.0 card or two 1.0 cards. Of course you can still rock the analog cable,
but you’ll have more fun with digital cable or ATSC over the air. You can even go for some straight up NTSC over the air
and relive your snow-filled childhood memories. They’re also launching an external SATA drive to hold all this HD video
you’re going to be PVRing now through oh-so-many sources. The new box looks good, the new remote is backlit, those
snazz download capabilities are still in force, and the good times should roll this year, so all is well in TiVo
fandom.
